Mustard Gas Conversion

Mustard Gas Conversion Project

US Army, URS (EG&G Division), Umatilla Army Depot, Oregon

Service Provided

Greenberry was selected by URS as the contractor to modify the Umatilla Army Depot Mustard Gas Disposal System in Umatilla, Oregon. Upon completion of the destruction of all Nerve Gas at the Facility, URS was preparing to begin a campaign to destroy all the remaining Mustard Gas at the Depot. This was an extremely dangerous project that was done while the facility was in operation, destroying the remainder of the Nerve Gas. It required not only extreme safe practices and controls, but a level of coordination that went far beyond the norm.

  • Installation of all air inlet, outlet (all SCH 40 pipe) and Filtration Systems to accommodate the changeover in materials being destroyed
  • 100% of all electrical and controls modifications
  • 100% of all structural steel fabrication and installation
  • 100% of all piping
  • 100% of all piping insulation supply and installation
  • 100% of all surface preparation and painting
  • Modification of the laboratory to accommodate testing for new agents, installation of new HVAC equipment, relocation of existing laboratory test equipment, modification of the HVAC system, test gas piping system modifications and total laboratory air balancing
  • Installation and of multiple site facilities to upgrade for the new requirements – including brine pipe spools and very large, elevated expansion joint replacements
  • Fabrication of 70 one-ton container cradles made of alloy 300
